This song has two authors. The story goes that an unknown man who suffered with “mental illness” wrote the last verse of this song…before the first two were written. Apparently during a time of sanity, he wrote this poem on the wall of his hospital room. It was found soon after he died. Evidently God gave him real clarity of heart and mind as he penned the beautiful verse. Sounds like a very sane and aware person, to me. After you read the words below, you may agree.
The inspiring poem was circulated by many who felt it should be preserved for future generations. Some time later, Frederick M. Lehman picked up a scrap of paper and penned the first two verses and chorus and added the existing third verse of the unknown author. Lehman assisted by his daughter Claudia, completed the hymn in 1917.
